É efetuado o resgate histórico de fatores que determinaram tanto os limites geográficos quanto o desenvolvimento social, político e econômico da Região. Por meio de indicadores socioeconômicos, bem como índices de desenvolvimento humano, busca-se entender o porquê do crescimento populacional não acompanhar o crescimento econômico, mesmo diante de renovados esforços para que isto se concretizasse. Por fim, nos resta ratificar a existência de desigualdades na referida região, ressaltando, contudo, o potencial do Município para entrar de forma definitiva na rota do crescimento. O que falta, conforme demonstrado na conclusão do trabalho, é uma visão mais abrangente de futuro e ousadia do poder público para que isto ocorra.This paper seeks to contribute to the understanding of the reasons that promoted the unbalanced growth of the municipality of Rio Grande da Serra, when compared to other municipalities of the ABC Region. It made the rescue of historical factors that determined both the geographical boundaries as social, political and economic region. Through socioeconomic indicators and human development indices, we seek to understand why the population growth does not follow economic growth, even in the face of renewed efforts to bring this to fruition. Finally, we are left to confirm the existence of inequities in this region, stressing, however, the potential to enter the city permanently in the path of growth.
